Newzones Introduces Sophie DeFrancesca!

We’re pleased to announce that Newzones now represents Sophie DeFrancesca.

Cassis, 2011
Wire Mesh, Liquid Rubber + Automotive Paint

62 x 33 x 30 in.
Sophie DeFrancesca graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in 1990 and has since exhibited throughout Canada and the United States. Working predominantly with wire mesh and liquid rubber, DeFrancesca explores cultural and social phenomenon. Her gown sculptures translate the epitome of femininity into a tangible form, but also exude a sense of whimsy.

Curator Angela Brayham writes: “Like the dresses my Barbies owned, DeFrancesca’s work allows your mind to wander, to imagine the life these gowns could have lived, or could live, while at the same time examining one’s own lived experience against its cultural context.”

Killing Me Softly, 2013
Galvanized Steel + Latex Paint
44 x 24 x 22 in

DeFrancesca's series of sculpted animal heads uses the trophy as a symbol to reflect on social issues and popular culture. Each form is embellished, whether with brightly coloured paint or Swarovski crystals, and radiates the same sense of fanciful majesty seen in her gown sculptures.

Of her work, Sophie says: “ With simply my hands and a pair of pliers, sheaths of cold hard steel mesh are transformed into ethereal confections that rise above their humble beginnings and reflect a childlike play and imagination”.

Make sure to visit the gallery to see these magnificent sculptures in person!
