Tip #1: Buy Art Because You Love It!

The most important thing to consider when you’re thinking about collecting a piece of art is whether you love it. It has to speak to you! Your environment will always be changing but the artwork will be a part of your personal collection. Most collectors love their individual picks as weeks and years go by. If you’re already collecting, we want to know: what was it about the first piece you bought that made you buy it?

Tip #2 : Know Your Dimensions

If you have a specific space where you want to hang a painting or place a sculpture, it’s helpful to be prepared with dimensions. Perhaps you don’t have a specific spot in mind just yet. Take a look around your home and pick out places that could use a bit of inspiration. Jot all of your dimensions down with the note app on your smart phone and you’ll have them wherever you go!

Tip #3: Visit as Many Galleries as You Can, Often!

Gallery staff live and breathe art and are helpful guides in your art education! If you are interested in a particular artist or artwork, ask them as many questions as you can. Also, new artwork is always arriving so it’s good to check in often! Get on the e-vite lists of your favourite galleries and then you’ll be kept informed of new inventory and openings!

Tip #4: Develop a Relationship with an Art Dealer

Once you decide to start collecting, it’s a good idea to develop a relationship with a reputable art dealer. Trust the professionals to keep you focused. The dealer can help to educate you about art and also help you to develop a strategy for curating your collection. You will find that an ongoing relationship with a dealer who has your collecting interests in mind makes acquiring art an even more rewarding experience.

Tip #5: Talk to Other Collectors!

If you know other people that collect art (think about it, chances are you do), talk to them and find out what they know. It’s good to find out about collecting from the perspective of someone who has already been doing it for a while. Ask them what they’ve learned about collecting and what the experience has been like for them.
