Newzones Introduces Holly King!

We’re pleased to announce that Newzones now represents photographic artist Holly King!

"Heavenly Invitation", 2009, C-Print, 48 x 72 in. ed /4

Holly King’s artwork depicts landscapes imagined by the artist. Early in her practice, the scenes were manufactured on a small scale from props and painted backdrops in her studio, where King investigated the tension between constructed and natural realities.

More recently, King has begun to photograph actual environments, yet the resulting image is still very much a product of King’s own manipulations. “People still assume the photographs are studio-constructed sets," says King. "And, in fact, they are very deliberately composed - first in the camera and afterwards in the colouring process."

Cinematic in nature, each photograph sets a stage for the viewer to imagine themselves within. The large scale of the photographs invites the viewer into the landscape and beckons exploration not only of the formal aspects of the composition, but also the exploration of memory and nostalgia.

Holly King was born in Montreal and studied visual arts at Laval University, where she earned her BFA in 1979. She then studied visual art and modern dance at York University, completing her MFA in 1981. King’s artworks can be found in many collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, ON, Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, Montréal, QC, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, QC, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, ON.
